Stanford assistant expected to be named UNLV defensive coordinator

Updated January 13, 2020 - 3:14 pm

Stanford inside linebackers coach Peter Hansen is expected to be hired as UNLV’s defensive coordinator, people close to the program said Monday.

UNLV first-year coach Marcus Arroyo won’t make any announcements until a hire is finalized.

Hansen has been at Stanford the past six seasons and was a defensive assistant for the Cardinal in 2009-10 working under coordinator Vic Fangio, now the Denver Broncos’ coach. As the inside linebackers coach, Hansen coached several players who made All-Pac-12 and were drafted in the NFL, including All-American Blake Martinez, who was taken in the fourth round in 2016 by the Green Bay Packers.

In between stints at Stanford, Hansen spent three seasons on the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive staff.

Should his hire be formalized, that would leave Arroyo to name an offensive coordinator as well as coaches to oversee wide receivers and the defensive line. He announced Thursday the hiring of seven assistant coaches as well as strength and conditioning coach Matt Fyle.

Hansen played football and basketball at Arizona, and was second-team All-Pac-10 in 2000 as a special teams player. He played basketball in the 1999-2000 and 2001-02 seasons.
