Super Bowl 59 betting line: Chiefs slight favorites over Eagles

Updated January 26, 2025 - 8:51 pm

The Chiefs are a win away from making NFL history.

Oddsmakers have made Kansas City slight favorites to become the first team ever to win three straight Super Bowls.

The Chiefs are consensus 1½-point favorites over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, which will take place Feb. 9 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The line opened at 1 on Sunday night at several sportsbooks and climbed as high as 2. The consensus total is 49½.

“We opened 1 and we moved quickly to 1½,” Westgate vice president of race and sports John Murray said. “You’ve got to open Kansas City (as) the favorite because the public is obviously going to bet on Kansas City.

“It just seems like things always go their way. It’s hard to bet against them.”

The Chiefs beat the Bills 32-29 in the AFC championship game Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri, covering as 1-point favorites. The game sailed over the total of 49.

The Eagles crushed the Commanders 55-23 in the NFC title game Sunday in Philadelphia, cruising to a cover as 6-point favorites. The game flew over the total of 47.

Super Bowl 59 is a rematch of Super Bowl 57. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes helped the Chiefs erase a 24-14 halftime deficit in 2023 en route to a 38-35 win over Philadelphia as a 1½-point underdog.

“The Eagles looked great (Sunday), but it was a little bit of an inferior opponent and a team nobody expected to be in the NFC title game in the Commanders,” Red Rock Resort sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said. “It’s almost impossible to make Mahomes an underdog in the postseason.”

Mahomes led the Chiefs to their second straight championship and third in four years in last year’s 25-22 overtime win over the 49ers in Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium. It was the first Super Bowl ever in Las Vegas.

Nevada sportsbooks took in $185.6 million in bets on the game to break the state record for Super Bowl betting handle, or amount wagered.

The previous Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl generated a betting handle of $153.2 million in Nevada in 2023.

“I think every year we’re looking at a potential record handle and this year’s no different,” South Point sportsbook director Chris Andrews said. “We’re writing business already. That’s always a good sign. They’re two very public teams with strong fan bases.”

Andrews took sharp money on the Chiefs -1 that caused him to move the line to 1½.

Caesars Sportsbook also reported 65 percent of the early action was on the Chiefs, which caused the book to bump them up to 2-point favorites.

“We expect this to continue throughout the week as the Chiefs are striving for that coveted threepeat that has never been done in NFL history,” Caesars head of football Joey Feazel said. “We couldn’t have dreamed up a better matchup to be played inside the Caesars Superdome, and we plan to build out our largest prop betting menu ever to match the magnitude of this moment.”
