The fix is in, and Harry Reid’s behind it

To the editor:

It will be a sad day in the city of Henderson on Tuesday, when the mayor and City Council will choose Josh Reid as the new city attorney.

As Review-Journal columnist Jane Ann Morrison pointed out last Monday, the city is about to hire a law school graduate from 2001 who did not meet the minimum requirements for the job. Solution: Keep lowering the standards until Josh Reid qualifies.

Who is Josh Reid? Yes, he is the youngest son of the Democratic Senate majority leader, Harry Reid. That is where his real qualifications end, compared to the other applicants.

Here is a novel idea: Let’s take a closer look at one of the 30 percent of original applicants who met the original minimum qualification requirements.

Former Municipal Judge George Assad, who is more than qualified, falls in that 30 percent, but he will not be considered for the position because he is not a Democrat and is not related to Harry Reid.

This is a message to Mayor Hafen and the City Council: Do not select someone like Josh Reid who, at best, meets the lowered standards, to be the next city attorney. If the City Council makes the choice to select a man who barely meets the lowered standards, then they, starting in 2013 when the mayor and other City Council members are up for re-election, will be taken to task by myself and others for putting politics over people.

City of Henderson residents pay your salary, not Harry Reid.

Train time

To the editor:

After reading Tuesday’s Review-Journal editorial on the Las Vegas Monorail trouble, I can now see the trouble that awaits the proposed DesertXpress, a high-speed train to a town no one wants to stop at.

How much time will you save by taking the train? Let’s say you and I leave my house in Las Vegas at the same time. I’m driving to Victorville, Calif., at 75 mph. You are taking the DesertXpress. By the time you drive to the train station, in traffic, park your car at the pay lot, unload your baggage, pay a porter, go through security checks, get on board and get settled in a seat, I’ll be past Primm.

You might catch up to me somewhere between Baker and Barstow. Oh, boy! You whizzed by me at 200 mph. By the time you get to Victorville, get off the train, pick up your baggage and secure a vehicle to drive to Los Angeles and all points West, I’ll be well past you, going down Cajon Pass into Southern California. I still have my own car to drive when I get there! Yep, really going to save a lot of time and money.

Blames Republicans

To the editor:

Don’t believe Republican claims that the talks held by the Supercommittee failed because the Democrats wanted to increase taxes on the American people. That’s just cover for them, an excuse for not reaching an agreement.

The only tax increase the Democrats proposed was on the 1 percent of Americans who are millionaires. They made no proposals to increase taxes for small businesses or the 99 percent of the rest of us.

However, the Republicans went into the talks with a handicap, as a substantial number of them had signed pledges not to increase taxes, even for millionaires. Instead they demanded major cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, which the Democrats would not agree to.

Unless the Republicans change and decide to represent the American people, and not just the millionaires, these disputes will continue.
