Perfect venue for a do-little president

To the editor:

How appropriate that President Obama held his most recent Las Vegas rally at Doolittle Park (“A big Obama ‘block party,’ ” Thursday Review-Journal). After four years of doing nothing to improve the state of the union, this arrogant, condescending man seeks re-election.

Whoever picked the site, knowingly or unknowing, got it right. But “do little” is what Obama has done, with the exception putting us $16 trillion in debt. Four more years of his reckless spending will only make our nation weaker than it already is.

Another Lincoln?

To the editor:

Few presidents were more hated during their tenure than Abraham Lincoln, yet he stands now as one of the greatest presidents who ever served.

President Barack Obama is also hated by many Americans, but if given a chance to serve his second term, history may well look upon him as one of the greatest presidents since Lincoln. I, for one, hope he gets a chance to prove himself.

Light COLA

To the editor:

Wow. A Social Security cost-of-living increase of 1.7 percent for seniors in 2013. How can our guys and gals in Washington look into a mirror without shame? Granting us this small increase is insulting, especially when Washington can send large sums of dollars all over the world for anything and everything.

It’s time for a big change in how Social Security increases are computed. The increased cost of gas, electricity and food far exceeds 1.7 percent. I would love to hear Mitt Romney and President Obama defend the justification for this increase.

No civility

To the editor:

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the letter from Joe Cerva in your Oct. 21 edition. He has decided not to set foot in a Home Depot store ever again because Bernie Marcus, co-founder of that company, was in a political ad opposing President Obama’s re-election. Then Mr. Cerva questions Mr. Marcus’ intellect because he disagrees with Mr. Marcus’ choice of candidate and his right to express that view?

It seems that many Democrats only believe in free speech when it is something they agree with. I don’t agree with George Clooney’s political views, but if I made the decision to never see one of his movies, I would only be denying myself the opportunity to see a great actor. Same with Paul McCartney. If I switched radio stations every time one of his songs came on, I’d miss hearing an incredible singer who has been one of my favorites for 40 years. Linda Ronstadt is radical and I would never attend one of her concerts because she brings politics into her shows, but I think she has one of the best voices ever recorded, so I listen to her songs.

Mr. Cerva’s rigid views will only deny him the chance to save money or buy something at Home Depot that Lowe’s doesn’t have.

Have you noticed that Oprah Winfrey and Barbra Streisand have been very quiet this political season? Ms. Streisand is on a concert tour this year, and Oprah’s TV channel is having problems. Maybe they realize that there are many people like Mr. Cerva out there who can’t accept people who think differently than they do, so they’ve made the business decision to keep quiet and not anger the roughly 50 percent of the population who may vote differently than them. How unfortunate that we have come to that.

When Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, he was able to get things done by working with lawmakers from the opposite party. Barack Obama has not been able to do that in the past four years, and he has said and done nothing to show that he will be able to do it if he gets another four years. We need a real leader and a smart businessman to run this country.

I hope my friends and co-workers who feel differently than me will still talk to me tomorrow.
