Lincoln foresaw destruction from within

To the editor:

Let me quote the great Abraham Lincoln: “At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we ourselves must be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”

This America is capturing all communication records of every single citizen — every single freeman — and storing them in a vast facility in Utah. This is going to protect us from terrorist attacks? While that very monitoring was in progress, two young men managed to bomb the Boston Marathon.

Meanwhile, our bridges are crumbling, our social welfare net is being shredded by the sequester, our jobs are returning at minimum-wage levels, and the gap between rich and poor is perhaps higher than at any time in American history.

Do Mr. Lincoln’s prophetic words not ring more true than ever? Where does the danger really lie? I ask you, the freemen of America.
