LETTERS: When will Republicans acknowledge Obama is right on Iran deal?

It’s time for Republicans in Congress to finally admit that it is just possible that the president actually did something right, this once.

At some point, at the risk of having the eternal reputation of serving in the most divisive Congress in history, some number of Republicans should consider acknowledging that a diplomatic solution with Iran is better than the continuation and escalation of division — especially considering that even the loudest opponents of the nuclear deal are calling for the same thing: more sanctions and a threat of military intervention.

Earth to the haters: Both of those punishments can be ramped back up to current levels (and beyond) in a matter of weeks. Where’s the controversy? If Iran doesn’t play ball, we go back to two forms of punishment that are relatively very easy to implement. We can move (more) warships into the region and freeze banking and trade relationships with a phone call. We don’t need the United Nations, we don’t need Congress to act again, we don’t even need to open an Instagram account.

The world is waiting to see if there is one adult in the room when the room is full of Republican members of Congress.

Iran nuclear deal

If the Iran nuclear deal is so great, why did President Barack Obama have to hard-sell it to Congress and the American people? Even prominent members of his own party — Sens. Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez — said they would vote against it (“Another Dem senator says he will vote against pact,” Aug. 19 Review-Journal).

So the Senate will reject the deal, President Obama will veto the Senate’s vote, and there will not be enough votes to override the veto. This is what you call a great deal?

Biden’s indecision

I do not understand the indecision of Vice President Joe Biden as he considers running for president (“Biden deciding if he has ‘heart and soul’ to run for president,” Aug. 28 Review-Journal online). Based on the recent death of his son, I can understand his grief. But if that is the insurmountable hurdle, then how could he assume the presidency if President Barack Obama were gone tomorrow?

Burdening taxpayers

I’m a proud second-generation member of an immigrant family. I was born in the United States. My grandparents were immigrants. They came over on a ship from Germany and England. They went through Ellis Island and learned the English language. They learned about our government and how it works and they learned American ways and values, and they did it all legally.

They went to work and made money. They paid their taxes, which built the schools I received my education in. They paid their taxes to provide the many roads on which I drive my car. They built houses, apartments and bridges and then raised a family.

I do not begrudge someone for wanting the American dream, it’s just that so many immigrants are breaking the law. They are crossing the border and having their babies in this country, and their children are entitled to all the benefits of citizenship without their paying the taxes that pay for those benefits. They have become a burden to our economy and, because of that, our government (Gov. Brian Sandoval, for example) has to raise my taxes to pay for schooling and government welfare programs for all of these children born from undocumented immigrant parents.

Why don’t any of our senators go to Mexico and try to straighten out this drug mess or work with the Mexican government to end this border-crossing problem? They’re right next door.

Gun-free theaters

What comes to mind regarding movie theaters searching bags in order to become gun-free zones are all the recent shootings in already-gun-free theaters. How well did this work out?

As a concealed-carry permit holder, I will not be a sitting duck in a gun-free theater. I have a right to protect myself and my family, so now I will buy movies on DVDs and watch them at home. I encourage all CCW holders to do the same.

UNLV football

Regarding the headline for the story on the UNLV football team’s season opener (“Competitive Rebels show promise in opening loss” Sunday’s Review-Journal), it sounds like a liberal Democrat is now writing for the Sports section.
