LETTERS: Law enforcement reaps what it sows with Bundys

Law enforcement officials at every level are reaping the whirlwind they created by not properly managing the Cliven Bundy incident in 2014. Money owed the government was never collected. Now we have a new batch of pretenders holed up in a federal building in Oregon. Cliven Bundy’s sons, feeling their star quality was needed in Oregon, have jumped into it.

Why are these people left to poke law enforcement in the eye? Enough already. There is no reason for allowing Mr. Bundy to poach or for letting this latest bunch of wannabes strut and posture in the face of authority. Our government’s present state of malfunction has nothing to do any of this. Laws are in place, and we as taxpayers need those laws to be enforced.

If local law enforcement is undermanned, call in the state. Institute Martial law. If you need more strength or perhaps operational cunning and stealth, call the military.

People who say the government is too big or overreaching demonstrate that they don’t grasp the fundamental principle of the Constitution. Our government is of the people, by the people and for the people — all of us. Our laws are in place for everyone. Our law books are not a menu board or a buffet to be cherry-picked.

So, to all you law enforcement politicos, fix this. Go get these Oregon guys and get our Nevada grazing money. The rest of us are tired of watching law enforcement get its ears boxed.

Bundy coverage

Does the Review-Journal own stock in the Bundy family? The newspaper must own a substantial amount, as that is the only reason I can come up with for the RJ to waste so much newsprint on the exploits of these outlaws.

First, we had to put up with front-page stories of Cliven Bundy and his “militia” threatening Bureau of Land Management employees with weapons (which is a felony). Now, we are being bombarded by his two sons, who think they can take over a public building in Oregon, in support of two poachers and arsonists.

The Bundys had their 15 minutes of fame. It is time for the RJ to simply ignore these characters and go back to reporting news. If the media would not give the Bundys the headlines they crave, the situation would quickly resolve itself, and the possibility of violence would dissipate like smoke in the wind.

Solar rates unfair

Regarding the change in net metering rates (“PUC OKs new solar rates,” Dec. 23 Review-Journal), we have solar panels on our home and until recently have loved the thought that we were doing something good for the environment by producing free electricity for our use.

Has anyone gone to NV Energy Website recently? The company is still encouraging residential solar installations, still offering the incentives. From its own website: “Solar energy does not release any harmful air or water pollution into the environment, deplete natural resources, or endanger animal or human health. Electricity generated by a solar system can be used to offset your energy consumption, resulting in lower monthly power bills.”

How can it be good business practice to charge my household more for accessing the grid than my neighbor’s house? Would you expect to pay more for gas simply because you drive a fuel-efficient car? Would you expect to pay double the price for milk because your family only uses one gallon a week and your neighbor uses four?

If nonsolar residential customers of NV Energy think we are getting a free ride, why are they not upset about all the incentives that electric automobile owners receive? They pay no gas taxes, while using the roads others pay full price for. And NV Energy and the state are looking to provide “free” charging stations along the highway from Reno to Las Vegas. So, it’s good for the environment to drive an electric car, but not to use solar power?

I am fully convinced that the members of the Nevada Public Utilities Commission are not friends of the public and are not making decisions in the best interest of the public. Beware, because next they will be coming to pluck from your pocket.

Frankly, if I had kids at Columbia who participated in these “protests,” I’d yank them out of school, toss their stuff onto the lawn and tell them to get a job, go live in the real world and pay your own way.
