Letter to the Editor, Aug. 28

My email is in response to the continuing problems at the crosswalk at the corner of University Avenue and Maryland Parkway near UNLV.

Being a crosswalk that has the one flashing light only when pressed, I have seen too many close calls with either myself or a fellow pedestrian with clueless drivers not knowing to stop.

There used to be some sort of police presence but not recently, and to most of these moronic drivers, if they see someone, it’s like target practice.

Unless maybe a speed bump could be placed on both sides of the crosswalks, the only solution may be to just put up a stoplight.

On the southbound side of Maryland Parkway, the length from Flamingo to Harmon is too far to have no light, and I don’t see too many drivers obeying the 30 mph speed limit, making the chances of someone stopping in time to yield to a pedestrian slim.

Regardless of the northbound side of Maryland Parkway from Harmon Avenue to the crosswalk at University Avenue being only about 200 yards, there really needs to be a stoplight as there are so many students crossing there daily. Don’t wait until something happens.

Editor’s note: McKenna also sent this email to University of Nevada, Las Vegas President Neal Smatresk. Here is Smatresk’s response:

We do not like the Maryland crossing either. A bridge or some other solution is needed.
