Just another manufactured federal crisis

To the editor:
It seems that the dysfunction that afflicted the 112th Congress and its fiscal cliff has infected the 113th Congress, with its sequestration cliff.
When will the American people wake up and realize that things happen in Congress the way lawmakers want them to? Our two-party system is infected by dysfunction and will never change. Time to change the system.

Doesn’t add up
To the editor:
Recent articles about the Clark County School District losing millions of dollars as a result of the federal government sequester seem very misleading. The school district’s website lists more than seven pages of teacher job openings, totaling about 350 positions. Where’s the money coming from for these positions?
As usual, no mention is made that President Obama is the author of sequestration. I exhort our members of Congress to let sequestration take place. The world will not come to an end. Most Americans won’t even notice.

Gone to pot
To the editor:
Review-Journal columnist Doug Elfman mystifies me. He continually glorifies the seedier side of Las Vegas, and your newspaper goes right along with him. His Thursday Vegasland column, “Comedian smokes weed ‘every day’ ” is another example of supremely bad taste. Who cares how many times a drunk fell, broke his tooth or acted like a total jerk? What is this column about anyway? What a waste of time and effort.
So, Review-Journal, do you support the legalization of pot, or do you not read what you print?

Clean energy
To the editor:
I believe it’s time for our state to become energy independent by investing in clean energy.
I want to thank Sen. Harry Reid for discussing renewable energy in his Feb. 20 address to the Legislature. Sen. Reid said, “It’s time to revisit Nevada’s renewable portfolio standard and update it to match the changed reality of Nevada’s energy landscape.” Yes, it is time to update our portfolio standard, because our state can be a leader in clean energy. Sen. Reid urged NV Energy to invest in Nevada and invest in renewables, and I urge them to do the same.
Great steps to clean energy can include reducing carbon pollution by retiring the Reid Gardner coal plant and focusing on energy efficiency programs.
Of course, in times of economic trouble, clean energy is also a resource of jobs. Sen. Reid also discussed this. Nevada can create jobs by investing in solar, wind, geothermal and efficiency.
With the support of President Barack Obama and Sen. Harry Reid, we can make Nevada a clean energy state.
