GOP won’t let president improve the economy

To the editor:

Instead of Thursday’s front-page headline – “House OKs repeal of health law” – why don’t you print the truth? For example, how about, “House continues to waste country’s time and money avoiding any substantive moves on job creation for fear that any successes would accrue to current administration.”

For purposes of headline brevity, you could just print, “GOP avoids problem solving for 33rd time.”

GOP plot

To the editor:

I know it is hard to believe, but there is strong evidence that Republican members of Congress have colluded to prevent the economy from growing in order to make President Obama look bad (weak on jobs), and thus lose the election.

Remember, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in early 2009, “My primary job is to make sure Obama is a one-term president.”

During recessions under the past three Republican presidents – Reagan, Pappy Bush and W. Bush – Congress increased spending in the public sector to promote jobs for teachers, firefighters, police and other government employees, and increased infrastructure spending to encourage employment in the construction industries,

What can we see during the Obama administration? During the first two years, when Democrats controlled both houses of Congress, the stimulus package was passed and public spending spiked. After the 2010 midterm elections, when Republicans gained control of the House and decreased the Democratic majority in the Senate, essentially no jobs bills have been enacted to stimulate public-sector spending.

It seems clear that there can be little other conclusion than that the Republicans in the House and Senate have decided it is more important to let the economy founder, thus sinking Mr. Obama’s chances for re-election, than it is to save the economy.

This may not be treason, but it’s damned close

To the editor:

I am 100 percent in agreement with the letter by Jan Gilbert, published July 7, about allowing those on the dole to vote. I also know many people who receive Social Security benefits who never worked and abuse the system – and who will vote for whoever will give “freebies.”

I am 75 years and have never gone one day without a job. I have worked since I was 12 years old, and was raised by my grandmother, who believed welfare was a sin. I left high school early, got my diplomas in the military, entered the workforce for 30 years with no retirement and started my own business for 20 years.

If I could do it without a formal education in America, anyone can.

We should hire inspectors to stop the people who abuse the system. We could get rid of those who never paid into the system and those who abuse the system by passing a law: If you did not contribute, no vote and no benefits.
