Festival would be better off downtown

To the editor:

I was appalled to read that the Fremont Street Experience has "evicted" the Taste & Sounds of Soul Festival from its streets (Wednesday Review-Journal). I attended this event two years in a row and I couldn’t walk down the street it was so crowded. Trying to get food, especially ribs, I found a long line.

The wonderful thing about it was that all ethnicities attended this event. Now they’ve been moved to Owens Avenue. Although it’s unfortunate, I don’t think tourists will be venturing over there. I live in Summerlin and I’m not going over there. At least on Fremont I could go in one of the casinos if I needed to sit down when I couldn’t find a seat on the street. Parking was easy.

Bring the festival back to the Fremont Street Experience. Until that is done, when my out-of-town visitors want to go out, I won’t take them down to Fremont Street.

To the editor:

Now that we have hired our new and expensive Clark County school superintendent, he needs an adviser at a cost of another $250,000 plus ("Board to vote on adviser pacts," Thursday Review-Journal)?

Why didn’t we just give the assistant superintendents a little more of the daily responsibilities and just hire the consultant?

Another option for getting outside viewpoints is to listen to the hundreds, if not thousands, of employees who came to the district after long careers in other states. Many of us have witnessed the good, the bad and the ugly, but no one ever wants to hear about the lessons learned from experience.

Car wars

To the editor:

Regarding the girl who was given a jaywalking ticket after being hit by a car (Friday Review-Journal): I think the girl definitely should have gotten that ticket and it shouldn’t have been dismissed.

Further, I think the driver should be suing her instead of the other way around. Anyone driving down Durango Drive has seen those kids run across the road dodging cars. They basically dare you to hit them.

I’m sorry she got hit, but if she had taken the time to walk to a marked crosswalk, it wouldn’t have happened. I would hope this will give the ones who still play Russian roulette with the cars something to think about.

Pay up

To the editor:

With our economy the way it is, there is a lot of talk about taxes. I have a suggestion to help improve the situation.

Gov. Brian Sandoval should hire a number of people to go house to house and ask the residents if they think that taxes should be raised. Record names and addresses, along with answers.

Now total the amount of money it would take to erase the budget gap, pay for raises and "upgrade" the schools. Divide that by the number of people who think taxes should be raised. Then send each one of them a bill for their share.

And I wouldn’t suggest using percentages and ability to pay and all that. To make it fair, have every person pay an equal share to the tax rolls.
