Eliminate the danger: Ban all fireworks

Every year on the Fourth of July there are serious problems concerning fireworks. This year has been the worst (“Parties turn tragic,” Wednesday Review-Journal). What does it take to convince our lawmakers that it is time to ban the sale of all fireworks?

No fireworks are “safe and sane.” In the hands of the wrong adult or a child there is always the element of danger. If sales were banned, as is done in other cities, it would be easy to locate illegal fireworks and eliminate the possibility of accidents, fires, personal burns and all related situations. If the charitable organizations that supposedly benefit from these sales are so dependent on the extra money, let them sell something else, not fireworks.

This should not be a time-consuming, heavy meditation decision. In today’s times we cannot afford to hesitate eliminating a danger in our communities. I hope the powers that be will take the necessary action. This is an example of a true no-brainer.

Inflation rate

I’m just curious why the cost of inflation for this extension of the fuel revenue index tax can be based on an approximately 4.56 percent annual inflation rate (“Clark County voters get say on fuel tax escalation,” Wednesday Review-Journal). Yet my Social Security and veterans disability payments were adjusted 0 percent this year and barely more than 1 percent last year.

Good show

In his Sunday column, “Moreno show did not have to fail,” Mike Weatherford’s explained how one of the best entertainers and shows can get blindsided. What a shame that this had to happen to Frankie Moreno. The show was one of Vegas’s best, if not the best. The talent and energy displayed by Mr. Moreno and all of his “family” was phenomenal.

It’s a shame that the show wasn’t given the opportunity and time to catch on with the tourists — a lot more exposure for Mr. Moreno and the show would have helped.

This city needs a show and talent such as these wonderful professionals. Let’s hope we get to see him in a new home soon that will keep him for years to come.

Sex operation

Las week, U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced that transgenders can now serve openly in our military forces. As far as I’m concerned, if they serve this country honorably, I have no problem with that.

I do have a problem with the taxpayer getting stuck with the bill for the cost of the sex-change operations that these transgender soldiers will be able to get while in the military. Are you kidding me?

We have thousands of veterans who still have to wait months to see a VA doctor, while these transgender soldiers get to go to the head of the line for these expensive operations. That’s outrageous. Here is an example of political correctness run amok.

The military is not a social experiment. I’m a Navy veteran, and I’m mad as hell.

Restraining order

I just read the front-page article about the domestic violence killings in which the judge did not approve an order of protection for the ex-wife (“Order denied before killings,” Wednesday Review-Journal). My experience with Metro is similar.

When I called the police due to serious threats from my ex, I was informed that they can’t be bothered every time we are “bickering.” When they stated if either of us laid hands on the other they’d arrest us both, my ex said, “Good!”

I cannot go to a shelter because I have two small dogs to care for. I guess women in Clark County are on their own.

LETTER: Highways will go the way of the horse and buggy

I personally can’t wait to give up the soporific scenery, racetrack-like mentality and beautiful Baker bathroom stops of the Interstate 15 car commute in favor of a sleek, smooth train.
