Berkley defends regional treasure, saves day on Red Rock Canyon

To the editor:

Kudos to Rep. Shelley Berkley for standing up to Utah Rep. Ron Bishop’s attempted amendment last week to eliminate funding for many areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management, including the Red Rock National Conservation Area. More than 1 million people visit Red Rock Canyon over the course of the year. It’s a huge boon to Southern Nevada’s economy.

In these trying economic times, the last thing we need as a community is to take out one of the lifelines that draws people here. As a casino employee, I am sometimes asked by tourists where to go to see something besides the Strip. I send them to Red Rock. Many have come back later to thank me, having had no idea that something like that was so close.

Red Rock makes Las Vegas even more special. We cannot let its funding be cut, and it would be nice to see our other representatives speak out in support of it, as Rep. Berkley did.
