Ban Gorman from local high school competition

To the editor:

When will the powers that be realize that Bishop Gorman is a rich recruiting prep school, disguised as a high school? They should not be allowed to participate in the Nevada state high school athletic tournaments.

It’s like the Miami Heat or the New York Giants playing in the NCAA tournaments. Let the “Gorman Gluttons” play other prep schools in other states. They certainly have the money to travel.

Cheating us

To the editor:

As I drive around town, I see numerous “corner entrepreneurs” and I wonder how many sales tax dollars are lost by allowing these street vendors to continue to operate. There must be hundreds of them out there, especially on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day.

What about the other fees legitimate business people pay including, but not limited to, business activity taxes, local license fees, worker’s compensation, unemployment insurance, Social Security, Medicare, etc. As anybody in business knows, the list goes on and on.

Where are the government entities — such as Metro, the health district, business license, sales tax, OSHA and the never-ending list of other agents constantly pestering legitimate businesses — whose job it is to police these various activities?

Why isn’t the Chamber of Commerce complaining? Does anybody give a damn about the monetary loss to local business people and the state treasury caused by these illegal activities?

How about we put together a task force consisting of appropriate federal, state and local officials to visit these vendors. In the event they are violating any laws or ordinances, then all their inventory and proceeds from the sales should be taken into evidence for use at their trial for these numerous violations.

Any undocumented people would be dealt with by ICE. Maybe then their presence would diminish and the sales tax and other revenues would increase.

Gambling state

To the editor:

I live in Nevada, and Nevada is a gambling state. We can to go to many places and gamble. Why can’t we have a state lottery? Why do I drive to California or Arizona to buy tickets? It’s gambling.

Nevada needs money for many things: schools, road construction, jobs, homelessness. A lottery could bring in lots of money for the state. How many jobs could a state lottery bring in? They could place a lottery station in each casino. Many jobs to be had. Plus, people will gamble after buying their tickets.

How many people in Nevada would like to have a state lottery? I’m only one person who would like to see Nevada become a lottery state. It is a gambling state or isn’t it?

Medical issues

To the editor:

I was totally appalled at the Feb. 25 letter from Vicki Linkin on the birth control issue calling two prior letter writers ignorant. If she wishes to critique the letters, she should try to stay close to the truth.

In no way were these people advocating to ban abortion or birth control, and the line about keeping women barefoot and pregnant was really over the top.

And since Ms. Linkin brings in medical issues, there are millions of people, every day, who have to dig in their pockets and pay for life-saving drugs. So is it really too much to ask women to bear some of the burden of paying for their own birth control?

Personally, I don’t believe a government mandate taking away the decision-making of a corporation, insurance company or religious organization is fair. And for the record, the decisions to have an abortion, use birth control, change one’s gender, undergo penile implants or use Viagra are matters of personal choice and should not be provided at other people’s expense.

Human sexuality, be it bad or good, is a personal choice. A government mandate is the people’s business.
