Union, company offer veterans hiring programs

If you’re a veteran with an honorable discharge, Sheet Metal Local No. 88 and Walmart are interested to see if your potential skills fit their veteran hiring preference.

“Hiring preference is given to military veterans who have an honorable discharge, a high school degree, can work well with their hands and pass a qualifying exam,” according to a news release from Sheet Metal Local No. 88.

The 5-year, free program is offered to qualified veterans at the International Training Center for Sheet Metal Workers in Las Vegas. For more information about the program go to www.88training.com/training_center_info.cfm.

Since launching its Veterans Welcome Home Commitment program in May 2013, Walmart has hired more than 950 veterans across Nevada, according to the company.

The program “guarantees a job offer to any eligible U.S. veteran honorably discharged from active duty since that time,” according to the Walmart release that quotes Lloyd Ringgold, a retired Air Force colonel and an associate at a Walmart store in the Las Vegas area.

“As a shift manager, many of the leadership qualities and skills I obtained in the military have been vital to my success. I encourage other veterans to pursue a career through the company’s Welcome Home Commitment,” Ringgold said.
