Soldier killed during training at Fort Campbell; death under investigation

An American soldier was fatally shot Tuesday during a training exercise at Fort Campbell, a spokesman for the U.S. Army base said.

The soldier, who was not immediately identified, died at 10:20 a.m. (11:20 a.m. ET) at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital after being shot earlier in the day, according to Fort Campbell spokesman Robert Jenkins.

No one else was wounded in the incident.

“The death currently is under investigation,” Jenkins said.

Fort Campbell is home to the Army’s fifth largest military population, including members of the 101st Airborne Division known as the “Screaming Eagles.” Its 105,000 acres are partly in Tennessee and partly in Kentucky.

Officials say they do not suspect foul play, Nashville 5 reports.
