FALLON — A Fallon native who spent the past three years as the deputy director of the Nevada Army National Guard has been named its new commander.
Col. Michael Hanifan succeeds Brig. Gen. Frank Gonzales, who spent nearly 37 years with the Nevada Guard.
Hanifan told the Lahontan Valley News he never expected to get the job but is humbled by the fact that Gonzales wanted him to be his successor.
As commander, Hanifan will be responsible for the training and readiness of 3,200 Nevada soldiers. He will assume the new position during a change of command ceremony in Reno on Sept. 7.
