Nellis air combat exercise will keep north Las Vegas Valley roaring through Friday

Residents at the north end of the Las Vegas Valley will hear more military aircraft noise than usual through Friday from an ongoing Red Flag air combat exercise that began Aug. 15 at Nellis Air Force Base.

A base spokesman said Monday that fighter jets and bombers will be returning to the base up until 11 p.m. daily.

This Red Flag exercise is the fourth and final one of the year. Aircraft take off and return to the base twice a day after flying against simulated combat against enemy jets over the 2.9 million-acre Nevada Test and Training Range north of Las Vegas.

In addition to aircraft based at Nellis that play adversarial roles, participants in Red Flag 16-4 include pilots flying F-16 Fighting Falcon jets from the 55th Fighter Squadron from Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina; and U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles from the 492nd Fighter Squadron, which is part of the 48th Fighter Wing based at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England.
