Memorial to honor five shot down in Afghanistan

The Nevada Army National Guard broke ground Saturday on a memorial for five members of a Chinook helicopter crew who were shot down in Afghanistan.

The memorial will be ready for dedication Sept. 25, five years after the death of Chief Warrant Officer John M. Flynn of Sparks and his flight engineer, Staff Sgt. Patrick D. Stewart of Fernley.

Three soldiers from the Oregon Army National Guard also died aboard the helicopter .
