Las Vegas group wins grant to help homeless veterans

The Labor Department will award a $230,000 grant to the U.S. Vets site in Las Vegas for employment and training services for homeless veterans.

“Programs like U.S. Vets provide valuable assistance to the veterans in Southern Nevada,” Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., said in a news release announcing the grant Friday. “Although the rate of homelessness among veterans has fallen, there are still far too many of our heroes on the streets and out of work.”

She said the funding will be used for the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program.

Titus noted that the Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates there are 57,000 veterans without homes on any given day, accounting for 12 percent of the homeless adult population.

“Now more than ever, as we welcome our soldiers home after over a decade of war, we must ensure that resources are available at home to provide for them,” she said. “These men and women fought for us; we cannot allow them to suffer when they return.”
