‘High Rollers’ earn Air Force unit award

Nevada’s “High Rollers” have reached a new height.

The state’s Air National Guard “High Rollers” 152nd Airlift Wing once again received the Air Force’s Outstanding Unit Award during a ceremony Sunday in Reno.

That makes eight times since 1964 that the wing, formerly known as the 152nd Reconnaissance Group, has received the award, according to the Nevada Air National Guard.

During the period for the latest award — Oct. 1, 2012, to Oct. 31, 2014 — the 152nd Airlift Wing deployed about 700 airmen to multiple countries in support of military operations in Southwest Asia and around the world.

About 50 airmen from the 152nd’s operations and maintenance groups also assisted in a joint exercise in France in 2014, Allied Forge, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

“It recognizes the hard work the men and women of our unit are doing,” said 152nd Wing commander Col. Karl Stark. “It’s a combination of putting an extraordinary group of people together, and when they are able to commit they’re able to do extraordinary things.”

Also Sunday, Nevada Air Guard Chief Master Sgt. Michael DelSoldato was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Afghanistan, and the 152nd Intelligence Squadron received the Meritorious Unit Award.

About 1,000 airmen serve in the wing based in Reno.
