Red Rock offers outdoor family fun

About 25 miles west of the Strip is a nearly 200,000-acre playground in the Mojave Desert and mountain landscape. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area begins in the backyard of the master-planned community Summerlin and stretches along the western rim of the city, hosting a world of outdoor family fun, even in the hot summer months.

For a simple scenic tour, you can slowly cruise the 13-mile loop, taking in the flora and fauna of the canyon’s desert landscape from the comfort of your air-conditioned car. Red Rock’s sandstone and limestone formations stretch as high as 7,000 feet while cactuses and flowering vegetation dot the lower plains.

Want to explore the area? Park the car and head out on foot along one of the 19 hiking trails.

For organized activities, the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association hosts guided hikes and educational sessions throughout the summer.

Red Rock Canyon is accessible from Charleston Boulevard/State Route 159.
