Outdoor activities around Southern Nevada

HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, join a geologist and a naturalist for a moderately strenuous, three-mile hike around Potato Knoll in Oak Creek Canyon; for ages 10 and older. On Wednesday, stroll around the Discovery Plaza outdoor exhibits to learn about Red Rock’s plants, animals and environment. On Friday, bring a camera and a tripod to learn the basics of nature photography, then explore the Calico Tanks Trail on a moderate, three-mile hike. On Feb. 24, the first wildflower hike of the season will be an easy-to-moderate, three-mile outing.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, view some of the arachnids, reptiles, birds and mammals found in Red Rock in a tabletop exhibit from 11 a.m. to noon at the visitor center. On Wednesday, a tabletop presentation from 1 to 3 p.m. at the visitor center will explain how the Paiute people native to the area adapted to survive in the Mojave Desert. On Friday, help clean up trash along a trail. On Saturday, join other volunteers to help spruce up the visitor center landscaping by trimming trees and removing weeds.
