Las Vegas Boy Scouts to gather at Floyd Lamb Park for Mega Scout Expo

The Las Vegas Area Council Boy Scouts of America invites the community to learn about scouting during the 2011 Mega Scout Expo scheduled for April 29 -May 1 at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road.

The Scouts plan to camp out on Friday night and welcome visitors to a free community fair with exhibits and fun from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 30.

There are about 19,000 B oy S couts in the Las Vegas Area Council, and the young people will be showing off the work they’ve done throughout the year to earn new belt loops and badges, Scout executive Shane Calendine said.

The Mega Scout Expo is a centerpiece event for the council.

"It’s our opportunity to not only show the good things Scouts are doing but to encourage other young men and women to join the program," Calendine said.

About 1,800 Scouts camp out in the park during Mega Scout Expo. There are campfires, survival activities and presentations of council awards.

The Scouts will be selling $5 coupon booklets in the days leading up to the event.

Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs is a different home for the council, which usually sets up camp at Sunset Park for its annual event. Sunset Park is currently under renovation.

The young people also work to beautify the space they camp at for the weekend. They help plant, weed, clean up horse areas and do whatever tasks are asked of them, activities director Brandon Dervishian said.

"We leave the park a little better than we found it," he said. "The parks have had open arms having us here."

Commercial vendors are welcome to show during the Saturday fair . No food sales. The deadline to exhibit is Saturday.

To reserve a space, call 962-8133.

"Scouts do a lot of wonderful things in the community," Dervishian said. "We just want to work together to make the city a better place."
