Henderson set to offer variety of things to do during summer’s evening hours
June 2, 2015 - 8:00 am
As the dog days of summer are on the horizon, Henderson View gathered evening activities for residents to beat the heat.
NIGHT HIKES
The Lake Mead Institute plans a Star Party at 8 p.m. June 20 in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Directions are to be provided by phone.
“We’ll have a brief night hike to spot nocturnal animals,” said Gabriel Zurn, park store manager. “Then we’ll have different stations of high-powered telescopes and binoculars to look at space, constellations, the moon and Saturn, if we can see it.”
The institute also plans a 2 1/2-mile hike along the Historic Railroad Trail for 7:30 p.m. July 31.
“It’s planned for that night because it’s supposed to be a full moon,” Zurn said. “We’ll start with a program about the moon and watch it rise with the binoculars. Then we’ll continue with the walk, hopefully using the moon’s light.”
Attendees should wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water and dress appropriately for the weather. Both events are free, but registration is required.

POOL PARTIES
The city of Henderson scheduled a variety of late-night pool activities throughout the summer.
Cosmic swim nights are planned from 8 to 10 p.m. June 26, July 24 and Aug. 14 at the Henderson Multigenerational Indoor Pool, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway. The events include music, diving games and swimming races. Admission is $5.
Dive-in movie nights are scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. throughout the summer at city pools. The Whitney Ranch Indoor Pool, 1575 Galleria Drive, is set to screen “Finding Nemo” June 19, “The Little Mermaid” July 17 and “Big Hero 6” Aug. 21; the Henderson Multigenerational Activity Pool is slated to show “Frozen” July 3; and the Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Road, plans to screen “Despicable Me 2” July 9 and “The Lion King” Aug. 7. Admission to each film is $5 per person.
The city also scheduled a Summer Fun Family Pool Party for families of individuals with disabilities from 8 to 10 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Whitney Ranch Activity Pool, 1575 Galleria Drive.
The event is set to include swimming, games, Popsicles and more. The cost is $12 per family, and registration is required by Aug. 2.
“It’s not unusual to find special swim events just for individuals with disabilities, but these events are unique because they are for the individual and his/her family members,” said city spokeswoman Kim Becker. “Our Therapeutic Recreation & Inclusion Services staff … (will be) on hand to assist those who may need adaptive life jackets and lift access for those who use wheelchairs.”

DISCO FEVER
Cowabunga Bay Water Park, 900 Galleria Drive, plans to throw Disco Pool Nights until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday July 10 through Aug. 8.
The events are set to include music, lights and games, according to Shane Huish, general manager and owner.
“We’ll light up the park and have fun music playing,” he said. “People said they wanted longer hours, so we’re making it fun instead of just staying open later.”
General admission costs $36.99 for adults and $27.99 for children shorter than 48 inches. Military and senior discounts are available. Season passes start at $89.99.
