Fishing Report, Jan. 10

■ LAKE MEAD – Vegas Wash is a prime spot for catching striped bass. Gizzard shad are hanging out in the shallows along the shoreline near the Vegas Wash inlet. They range in size from about 2 to 6 inches. Trolling at depths of 15 to 25 feet with live bait or shad imitations has been successful. Vary your speed and the depth of your presentation. Anglers are catching smaller fish, but the action has been good. Largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing is slow.  

■ LAKE MOHAVE – One lucky angler reeled in a 15-pound striper near mile marker 52. The fish hit an AC Plug. Trout fishing has been steady near the dock at Willow Beach after weekly plants by the National Fish Hatchery. There is good news for boaters who frequent Cottonwood Cove. The final phase of their new marina should be finished when the fuel dock is completed next week.  

■ URBAN PONDS – Weekly fish plants by the Nevada Department of Wildlife have made the urban ponds a good choice for a day of fishing. The limit on these waters is three game fish, regardless of species. Anglers practicing catch-and-release fishing are encouraged to use barbless hooks and avoid treble hooks. NDOW requests that catch-and-release anglers handle fish only with wet hands and avoid the use of towels. Towels remove a fish’s protective "slime."

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA – Anglers fishing through the ice are reporting good fishing on Haymeadow and Cold Springs. Effective baits include glow tube jigs and glow ice flies tipped with night crawlers or wax worms. The ice is 6 inches thick on Haymeadow and Cold Springs Reservoirs, but the ice on Dacey and Adams-McGill remains unsafe. Temperatures are on the rise this week, so use caution when venturing onto the ice. Soft spots in the ice might exist. Roads are covered in packed snow, but access is not a problem.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR – The ice has been thickening across the lake, with the thickest ice found near the dock and the southern end of the lake. Ice depths range from 7 to 11 inches. Anglers have found good action for rainbow trout ranging from 13 to 16 inches in length. Night crawlers have been the bait of choice. ■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR – If you are looking to escape crowds, this is the place. Those who have ventured out to fish through the ice have found lots of success for rainbows using night crawlers. The ice has been ranging from 5 to 8 inches thick, with the thickest ice found in the upper portion of the lake.
