Fishing Report, Aug. 2

■ LAKE MEAD – Cut anchovies and sardines have been catching striped bass in the Vegas Wash area and in the upper basins from Echo Bay to South Cove. The best action is taking place in the early morning and late afternoon. Night fishing under lights is also having some success, and there have been sporadic reports of striper boils at sunrise. Action has slowed in the Hemenway area.

■ LAKE MOHAVE – Trout imitations have been getting attention from aggressive striped bass following the weekly Friday trout plants at Willow Beach. Stocked rainbow trout will generally bite on PowerBait or PowerWorms in a variety of flavors or colors, including yellow, peach and garlic. They also will hit small spinners and lures. From Cottonwood Cove to Katherine Landing, anglers have found good action for bluegill, black bass, stripers and catfish. Bluegill are hanging out at the edge of cover, such as that provided by artificial fish habitat structures put in by the Nevada and Arizona wildlife agencies. Catfish have been hitting baits fished on the bottom.

■ LAUGHLIN – Striper action is sluggish, though fish have been caught from Davis Camp south past the Avi resort. Anglers are still catching a few rainbow trout in the Big Bend area during early-morning hours.

■ URBAN PONDS – Catfish action remains slow, but there was a report of a 3-pound cat coming from the pond at Floyd Lamb Park. For bluegill, try a mealworm fished below a bobber or a small fly pattern fished under a strike indicator. Work the edges of grass beds where water starts to deepen or just inside of the tule beds.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA – Storm runoff has raised the water level in all reservoirs and caused some rough road conditions. Trout fishing is slow, but anglers are finding good action for largemouth bass. Top-water baits are generally productive now through late summer.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR – Fishing has slowed somewhat, but anglers are still catching rainbow trout and a few largemouth bass. Use mini-marshmallows combined with a small red worm to keep the bait out of the weeds. PowerBait also can be effective.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR – Fishing has been good for crappie, largemouth bass and rainbow trout. Brown or olive Woolly Buggers can be effective for bass and rainbow trout. The trout also will hit PowerBait, worms and spinners.
