Rhythm Kitchen adds upscale touch to traditional Louisiana cooking

After years of cutting his chef’s teeth in his father’s Louisiana-style restaurants, Scott Ghormley hankered for one of his own.
Enter Rhythm Kitchen, 6435 S. Decatur Blvd. It’s got the South Louisiana influences on the menu, but it’s a little more upscale, Ghormley says. The restaurant serves catfish and frog legs, but there’s also tuna and halibut on the menu.
The restaurant features two stories with a main dining room and bar area on the first floor and a room that can accommodate banquets and live entertainment. Currently, an Elvis tribute artist puts on one show a month and Ghormley is searching for some local bands to fill out the calendar.
The name, Rhythm Kitchen, comes from an entertainer nicknamed Rhythm, who worked in one of his dad’s restaurants. Ghormley liked the sound of it. Every restaurant needs to find it’s rhythm and energy, too, he adds.
It serves lunch, dinner and offers a happy hour menu.
The restaurant seats 200 downstairs and 200 upstairs. Reservations are not required, but they are accepted at 767-8438.
Hours are Mondays – Fridays 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Specialties: All-you-can-eat nights with crab on Tuesdays ($29), a Cajun shrimp boil on Thursdays ($18) and a catfish fry on Saturdays ($13). That comes with a house salad and choice of side dish.
Appetizers: Shrimp brochette or bacon-wrapped shrimp, $9.79; Southern-fried alligator tail, $9.29; Rhythm Kitchen oysters with spinach and Cajun cheese sauce, $9.79.
Soups and salads: Thai salad, $7.99; Louisiana seafood gumbo or New England clam chowder, both $5.79 for cup, $7.79 for a bowl.
Entrees: New Orleans seafood delight, blackened catfish over rice covered with shrimp and Cajun sauce, $15.29; lemon herb chicken, $14.79; prime rib, $16.29 for 10 ounces, $19.79 for 16 ounces.
Desserts: Bananas Foster, $8.79; bread pudding, $5.59; creme brulee, $6.99.
