Restaurant aims to make an unforgettable burger

A good burger always makes an impression on burger lovers.

That’s why Matt Rogers is confident that his burgers will make their mark on the Las Vegas burger scene one smashed, fried patty at a time.

Smashburger, a franchise of the Colorado-based fast-casual burger chain, opened a local restaurant in March at 7541 W. Lake Mead Blvd. It strives to serve the kind of burger that wakes people up in the middle of the night, craving a juicy patty slathered in its Smash sauce, a mixture of mayonnaise, mustard and sweet relish with a squeeze of lemon juice, Rogers says.

The name sums up the whole theme of the restaurant. Ground beef is rolled into a ball, either a third- or half-pound, and smashed on a flat-top grill.

"We butter the flat top and smash the meat and it creates a great sear," Rogers says.

The menu is small, focused on burgers made with Angus beef, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, milkshakes and a few salads. And sides, of course, from regular french fries to fried vegetables. Beer and wine will eventually be offered, too.

The idea is to provide restaurant-quality food in fast-food time. Diners order at a counter and a server brings their food out, Rogers says.

Smashburger is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Reservations are not required.
