Local bartender puts out the fireball

You may have heard that Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, produced by Louisiana-based Sazerac and beloved of seemingly everyone on the ragged edge of legal drinking, has been recalled in Finland, Sweden and Norway because it contains too much propylene glycol, commonly used in food products, cosmetics and … umm … antifreeze.

Fireball hasn’t been recalled in the United States, we’re guessing much to the relief of college students. That’s because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says propylene glycol is “generally recognized as safe” in food, and because the amount used in Fireball falls below U.S. limits. The Scandinavian limits are lower; hence the recall.

More than $60 million worth of the stuff was sold last year, but the recalls are apparently making the more circumspect youthful imbibers a little nervous. In response, mixologist Juyoung Kang at the Blvd. Cocktail Company has created a house-made version, infusing American whiskey with spices including cinnamon, star anise, cardamom, nutmeg and cloves.
