Traditional meets modern with this Japanese gem. Entering the restaurant, one notices the decor, which features calming cherry blossom trees and hanging paper scroll window tints. Gentle instrumental melodies flood the space. Lunch specials ($8) are served from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include classics such as teriyaki, tempura and tonkatsu (breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet), each served with rice, miso soup and salad. From the sushi bar, the nigiri includes tuna, salmon and shrimp, with sauces complemented by the fresh fish. Appetizers range from $3 to $9 and include gyoza (six pieces for $4), which are lightly fried pot stickers with pork filling; dashimaki tamago ($6), a Japanese rolled omelet; and edamame ($3), soybeans served in the pod in two flavors, sea salt and spicy chili. The dinner menu includes rib-eye beef ($13), served with crisp cabbage and udon noodles with lemon seasoning, and chicken ($11). Sweet and savory teriyaki sauce complements both dishes. Ichiban West is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
