LAS VEGAS CUPCAKE BAKE-OFF PLANNED AUG. 10 AT THE SUNCOAST

The third annual Las Vegas Cupcake Bake-Off is planned for Aug. 10 at the Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive. Doors open at noon.

Bakers will compete for the title of “Best Cupcake Baker in the West” and to win a portion of $2,500 in cash prizes. The grand prizewinner will receive $1,500, with prizes also being awarded to second and third place.

Attendees will enjoy an open bar and all-you-can-eat sweets by some of the greatest bakeries in town, including Buddy V’s Ristorante, Carlo’s Bakery, Pinkbox Doughnuts, Manon Bakery and Gimme Some Sugar. Attendees also will vote for their favorite cupcake.

BELLAGIO ANNOUNCES CULINARY CLASSROOM SCHEDULE FOR 2014

The Executive Chef’s Culinary Classroom at the Bellagio, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd. South, has announced its schedule for 2014. The educational series includes interactive cooking classes led by executive chef Edmund Wong and his team. Each two-hour class is held in Tuscany Kitchen, a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen. PALMS TO OPEN LAO SZE CHUAN IN AUGUST

Lao Sze Chuan by chef Tony Hu is set to open at the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road, in August.

Lao symbolizes old, traditional and authentic Mandarin cuisine, while Sze Chuan is the province from which the spicy cuisine originates. The menu features more than 200 beef, chicken, pork and seafood options, along with soups, dim sum and hot pots. The Palms location also will feature new items, such as Peppercorn Fish.

The restaurant will seat 150 and have a patio overlooking the Palms Pool.
