Opening Friday: ‘The Giver,’ some geezers and more

The Expendables 3: The co-founder of The Expendables (Mel Gibson) wages war against his former team in this sequel, co-starring the usual suspects as well as newcomers Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Kelsey Grammer and Ronda Rousey. At multiple locations. (126 min.) PG-13; violence including intense sustained gun battles and fight scenes, and for language.
The Giver: In a society where race, religion and most everything else that divides people has been eliminated, a teenager (Brenton Thwaites) has been tapped to store all of the memories of life before The Sameness in this adaptation of the Lois Lowry novel co-starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. At multiple locations. (97 min.) PG-13; a mature thematic image and some sci-fi action/violence.
Let’s be Cops: When two friends (Damon Wayans Jr., Jake Johnson) dress as police officers for a costume party, they get so much attention they carry the charade a little too far in this comedy. At multiple locations. (104 min.) R; language including sexual references, some graphic nudity, violence and drug use.
Magic in the Moonlight: A magician (Colin Firth) tries to prove a psychic medium (Emma Stone) is a fake in this romantic comedy from Woody Allen. At Orleans and Suncoast. (110 min.) PG-13; a brief suggestive comment and smoking throughout.
What If: A medical school dropout (Daniel Radcliffe) strikes up a friendship, and possibly more, with an animator (Zoe Kazan) in this romantic comedy. At multiple locations. (102 min.) PG-13; sexual content including references throughout, partial nudity and language.
