Nevada National Guard soldiers returning to Iraq

Nevada’s 1864th Transportation Company will be returning to Iraq and Kuwait in the spring where it left in October 2005 after concluding a 14-month stint to haul soldiers, equipment and supplies in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

More than 160 Army National Guard soldiers from the state are set to deploy when the unit departs early next year, Guard spokeswoman April Conway said in an announcement Tuesday.

On its last deployment, the 1864th ran more than 200 convoys with its trucks logging about 3.5 million miles of driving combined.

About 130 Nevada soldiers were involved in the convoys that traveled on ambush-prone roads from depots in Kuwait to bases in Baghdad, Mosul and elsewhere.

Soldiers from the unit will be training Friday at the Washoe County Armory in Reno and Saturday at the Floyd Edsel Training Facility on North Range Road in Las Vegas.
