RENO — A new Navy vessel will bear the name of Nevada’s capital.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said he decided to name the joint high-speed vessel the USNS Carson City to honor the city’s “American values of community, ingenuity and perseverance.”
It will be the second Navy ship named in honor of Carson City. The first, a patrol frigate (PF 50), earned two battle stars for World War II service.
U.S. Sens. Harry Reid and Dean Heller and Gov. Brian Sandoval on Friday issued statements praising the new vessel’s name, saying it will serve as a reminder of the state’s gratitude for Nevada military veterans.
The combat ship, which features a 20,000-square-foot mission deck and an aviation flight deck, is designed for added mobility and flexibility, and use and operations close to shore.
