Las Vegas Lights’ season halted over coronavirus concerns
The United Soccer League on Thursday morning announced a suspension of its 2020 season for a minimum of 30 days due to the coronavirus pandemic, putting the Lights FC in a holding pattern.
The Lights were scheduled to play their home opener Saturday against Sacramento Republic FC. They opened their season March 7 with a 1-1 away draw with San Diego Loyal SC.
“It was very clear from our owners that the health and safety of players, fans and staff was their top priority,” said USL CEO Alec Papadakis in a statement. “In consultation with local, state and national health authorities, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security, we have temporarily suspended match play for a minimum of 30 days.”
Lights owner Brett Lashbrook said USL owners made the decision to suspend the season during a conference call.
“The full intention is to try to reschedule every game,” Lashbrook said. “We believe if it is at 30 days, that can easily be accomplished. We’re in month 1 of a 10-month season.”
Lashbrook said it has yet to be determined if Lights players will remain in Las Vegas to practice during the 30-day period.
“That will go back to the (USL) players’ association,” he said. “MLS has decided for right now players will stay in their markets. I think everybody is standing around looking at each other saying we don’t know what to do.”
