Laughlin VA clinic to open in March

The Department of Veterans Affairs expects to open a renovated health care clinic in Laughlin to serve veterans in rural areas of Southern Nevada.

VA spokesman Richard Beam said the clinic, at 3650 South Point Circle, has been under construction in an existing building. With that phase recently completed, the new rural outreach clinic should open in early March. The project cost about $800,000.

“The parking lot is going to have changes made for more convenience,” Beam said Monday.

He said the 5,500-square-foot clinic includes “tele-health” video services for doctors to screen patients remotely for care in skin, hearing and retinal disorders.

Beam said the Laughlin clinic is designed to provide health care for veterans already enrolled in the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System but could also be made available to veterans living in rural areas of Arizona adjacent to Nevada.

“If a veteran comes from Arizona, we’ll coordinate care,” he said. “But first we want to serve the current population there.” He added that out-of-state veterans who are already in the Southern Nevada system “won’t be an issue.”

In a news release announcing the clinic’s projected opening in March, VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System Director Isabel Duff said, “We have a serious need to expand our capacity to serve Veterans in the Southeast area and I am delighted to announce the opening of our outreach clinic.”

In the same release, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said: “It is our responsibility as Nevadans to provide our state’s veterans, who have sacrificed so much, the best possible care.”

And Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev., said: “The opening of this VA clinic has been a long time coming, and I thank everyone — from the Department of Veterans Affairs and Isabel Duff to the building managers and contractors — for their persistence and patience in seeing this project through to the end. … I am excited that this facility will improve the welfare and quality of life for our veterans.”
