Las Vegas dumps flashy logo after less than a year

The City of Las Vegas has dumped its flashy new logo after less than a year.

The logo adorned signs, promotional materials, work attire, staff business cards, email signatures, vehicles and equipment.

It cost the city roughly $20,000 to develop and trademark.

Now, the city is pivoting back to the official city seal.

City Manager Scott Adams said a fun logo doesn’t carry with it the gravity the city seal does.

Adams doesn’t estimate there will be much of a cost to the city to transition back to the seal, because the city will re-brand things as they’re retired and replaced.

The man accused of stabbing a Palazzo security guard has made his first court appearance.

Las Vegas police arrested Joseph Espinoza, 34, near The Mirage after the incident.

In 2015 he tried to stab a security guard at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Deputy Public Defender Michael Wilfong said Espinoza has a history of mental illness.

In the new case, he faces charges of attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon.

The injured guard is expected to survive.

Justice of the Peace Pro Tem Holly Stoberski ruled that he will be held on $100,000 bail.

“Maybe my parents can bail me out,” Espinoza said.

A preliminary hearing is slated for Aug. 28.

What Uber and Lyft are doing to Las Vegas Strip busses

Bus ridership on the Las Vegas Strip has declined as ride-hailing apps rise.

Nearly 13 million boardings were reported on Strip area routes over the last year.

That’s a 10.3 percent decline from the previous year.

The Regional Transportation Commission says it’s okay with the changes caused by technologies like Uber and Lyft.

It says it may need to change its schedules as a result.

Buses operating along the Strip generated more than $20 million last year, down nearly 12 percent.

Despite the declines, RTC says bus lines along the Strip are the most profitable routes in the U.S.

Nevada approves opening up marijuana distribution rights

Nevada approves opening up marijuana distribution rights

Nevada has approved opening up marijuana distribution rights.

Nevada’s Department of Taxation has decided that there are an inadequate number of liquor distributors interested in transporting marijuana to retail establishments.

The decision came after a hearing on whether the alcohol industry alone is sufficient to distribute pot to points of sale.

The agency will begin processing distribution licenses to marijuana licensees, Deonne Contine said.

The alcohol industry was given the exclusive right for 18 months to distribute recreational marijuana under the ballot measure that legalized sales. But that exclusivity was based on having enough distributors to fill the need.

A Las Vegas visitor has won a Megabucks jackpot valued at about $11.8 million.
The winner, identified only as Rodolfo T., hit the jackpot about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fremont in downtown Las Vegas. He made a max-bet wager on the IGT Megabucks Double 3X4X5X Pay game to win the prize.
“The Fremont has awarded many thousands of jackpots throughout its 60-year history in Las Vegas, but none quite like this,” said Vice President and General Manager of Fremont Jim Sullivan said in a email.“We’re incredibly excited to be a part of this amazing jackpot.”
IGT progressive jackpots typically offer a lump sum payment less than the actual jackpot or they can be paid out in annual installments over a number of years.
Megabucks resets at $10 million.

Judge cuts testimony short in Bunkerville retrial

Judge cuts testimony short in Bunkerville retrial

A federal judge in Las Vegas cut short the testimony of an Idaho gun enthusiast in the middle of his Bunkerville standoff retrial.

Eric Parker was photographed in April 2014 pointing a long gun through a barrier on I-15 that overlooked a ditch where protesters had gathered to face BLM agents.

Before the start of the trial, U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro barred the defense from referencing constitutional rights to freely assemble and to bear arms.

Prosecutors first objected to Parker’s testimony about 20 minutes after he took the stand and uttered the words “First Amendment.”

After spending less than an hour testifying on the stand, Parker seemed to reference the area where he believed a sniper had been.

Acting U.S. Attorney Steve Myhre objected and requested a meeting with the judge and defense attorneys.

Moments later, Navarro returned to the bench and told Parker to step down.

Attorney Jess Marchese said Navarro ruled Parker had violated a court order by describing what he saw.

Police records implicated De’Mario Lofton-Robinson in the deadly shooting, which Lt. Dan McGrath said happened “for no apparent reason.”

Lofton-Robinson, 18, was arrested Thursday on charges of murder with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.

He’s being held in Clark County Detention Center without bail.

The student killed, Gabriel George Valenzuela, 24, got into a confrontation with four young men.

He was shot at least three times and died at the hospital.

His family was inside the house during the shooting and heard the gunshots.

1. Officers identified a teenage suspect, De’Mario Lofton-Robinson, in the death of a CSN nursing student. Lofton-Robinson, 18, was arrested Thursday on multiple charges, including murder with a deadly weapon. Police say Gabriel George Valenzuela pulled into his driveway and checked his mail before getting into a confrontation with four men. He was shot at least 3 times in his driveway.

2. A federal judge cut a defendant’s testimony short in the middle of his Bunkerville standoff retrial. Before starting the trial, U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro barred the defense from referencing constitutional rights to assemble or bear arms and prosecutors objected to Eric Parker’s reference to a sniper being involved in the standoff. The court said Parker violated a court order in his testimony.

3. A naked man shot by police last Saturday had $30,000 with him. Court documents show that Jason Funke had donated to the Life Spring Christian Church before and police found the money with his clothing in the church doorway. Police say Funke appeared to be meditating outside the church when he approached police and then fled to retrieve a gun left on the ground.
