How is home-schooling working for children in the Las Vegas area? The Review-Journal interviewed a family with nine children (all home-schooled) and the woman behind RISE, a resource center for parents that want options outside of the private and public school systems.

A teacher at Northwest Career and Technical Academy won’t get his job back after being fired for watching porn, officials say.

The incident happened on a school computer while students were present, Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky said.

The teacher was removed from the classroom in September and was sent a termination letter on Dec. 12.

The teacher fought that decision, filing a grievance that went to arbitration.

An arbitrator last week upheld the teacher’s termination, the district confirmed.

An attorney for the teachers union identified the instructor as Daryl Slade.

Slade said he intends to fight the arbitrator’s decision.

An 18-year-old man arrested in connection with the deadly stabbing of a woman inside a northwest valley home in early July told Las Vegas police he planned the attack, arrest documents show.
Steven Olsen told police he met 45-year-old Lizzette Schley online, and they hung out together on several occasions, the Metropolitan Police Department report said. After a few months, Olsen decided that he did not want to date Schley anymore because of their age gap.
Olsen said Schley reached out to him to meet up on the morning of July 9 at her house in the 1700 block of Rockcrest Drive for breakfast and to reconnect, the report said.
Instead, he planned to rob and kill Schley, Olsen told police in the report.

Clark County issued a stern message to Southern Nevada marijuana businesses: Stop advertising stoned yoga, or we’ll yank your license to sell weed.
In a letter sent Monday, Clark County Business Licensing Director Jacqueline Holloway told cannabis companies to stop advertising events that promote public marijuana consumption — including events held at a person’s home.
“We write to remind you that public consumption of marijuana is unlawful,” the letter reads.
“It is unlawful to advertise and invite the public to consume marijuana at parties, dining events, recreational events such as yoga and swimming, and other types of events, even if events are held in a private residence.”
Holloway also noted that any pot business found to be sponsoring or even affiliated with an event or business promoting public consumption “risks the suspension or revocation of their business license.”
County spokesman Erik Pappa said some of businesses were recently listed as sponsors for events that paired yoga and karate with marijuana consumption.

On the shelf in Adam Rella’s studio is at least ten binders, two inches thick, of plastic coated drawings. Thousands and thousands of drawings.

A D.J., photographer and artist, Rella has spent more than ten years drawing simple, comical faces and characters that he says connect with any age, race, or gender. He works in a variety of mediums, uses bright colors, and sometimes simple phrases to pull the viewer in, like “have it your way,” or “let’s bubble baby.”

He said that growing up he loved cartoons and wacky faces, just “balls of energy” that make you feel good. He’s worked to keep the upbeat vibe in his art.

“(Art) should never give you a negative feeling,” he says.

He plans to create his brand, Pretty Done, into a global empire, placing his work on anything from toys to clothes to furniture.

The Ferguson Motel, of the Downtown Project, commissioned him to paint two murals.

The parent company of Station Casinos has announced plans to add luxury movie theaters and a resort-style pool complex to Palace Station as part of a $191 million investment in two properties.
Company executives said in an earnings call for Red Rock Resorts on Tuesday that $76 million in new improvements at Palace Station also would include a new restaurant, casino bar, race and sports book and a renovated poker room. The new investment is in addition to a completed $115 million renovation and expansion that includes a new low-rise exterior facade, two restaurants, porte-cochere, casino valet, new bingo room and improved parking and access at Palace. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
Station also is putting $146 million into two restaurants, an upgrade to movie theaters, renovated meeting and convention space, a rooftop ultralounge, a new high-limit area, new hotel registration and VIP check-in areas and other projects at its recently acquired Palms property. Those projects are expected to be completed by next year’s second quarter.

A student pulled into his central-valley driveway Wednesday morning and checked his mail. Moments later, he was shot “for no apparent reason,” police said.
The student, a man about 25 years old, got into a confrontation with four young men, Metropolitan Police Department said. He was then shot at least three times in his driveway about 12:10 a.m. on the 5500 block of West Dewey Drive, near Russell and Lindell roads.
He died at a hospital, Metro Lt. David Gordon said.
The door to his car was still open as homicide detectives investigated Wednesday morning.

The Vegas Golden Knights will get to keep their nickname.
The NHL expansion team was partially successful in their appeal to have their name and logos trademarked after the United States Patent and Trademark Office gave approval for the team to continue to use its name for identification and competition purposes.
However, it did not grant the same approval for the team to protect its logo on its merchandise and sportswear. That trademark is suspended pending further appeal.
Initially, the patent office denied the team’s trademark request in December, citing it might cause confusion with a college in New York that also had the Golden Knights nickname. The NHL expansion team appealed in early June and received its ruling Tuesday.
Peter Sadowski, the team’s legal counsel, said there will be another attempt to get the same protection for the logos and merchandise.

A transient man stabbed a resort security guard in the chest on the casino floor of a Strip hotel Wednesday morning, Las Vegas police said.
The Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a stabbing inside the Palazzo, 3325 Las Vegas Blvd. South, just before 7 a.m.
Las Vegas police spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said the security guard approached a man with a knife who had been behaving erratically and was stabbed in the chest.
The assailant, described only as a homeless man who frequented the area, then fled the hotel and ran across the boulevard. Police arrested a suspect shortly afterward near The Mirage, Meltzer said.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is investing more than $100 million to upgrade its rooms, joining a growing list of Strip casinos refreshing properties as tourism flourishes in the nation’s entertainment capital.
The two-tower, high-rise casino will gut 2,895 rooms in its first major renovation since opening nearly seven years ago, said Patrick Nichols, senior vice president of strategy and business development.
The Cosmopolitan launched the upgrade of the Boulevard Tower in June and aims to complete it before the end of the year. It will start on the Chelsea Tower in January and finish it later in 2018, said Nichols.
“We are stripping the rooms down to concrete floors and drywall,” said Nichols. “We will have a fully renovated room product in December 2018.”
In addition to new furniture and fixtures, The Cosmopolitan will add 65-inch TVs as well as iPads to every room.
