Las Vegas morning update for Wednesday, June 21st

1. Metro’s abuse and neglect detectives are investigating the deadly drowning of a 14-year-old boy last night. Police say the unconscious teenager wasn’t breathing when he was pulled out of the water near Alta Drive and Valley View Boulevard. It isn’t clear if an adult was watching him when he went underwater.

2. The Golden Knights made headlines again with the unveiling of their uniform last night. The jerseys are a combination of steel gray, black, gold and red. But the team’s uniform comes with an accessory that no other NHL team wears: white gloves. Majority owner Bill Foley says the logo and uniform represent strength and power.

3. And Las Vegas hits 117 degrees. The National Weather Service says the desert tied the all-time record high yesterday. The city has only been this hot three other times in June 2013, July 2005 and July 1942. The weather service says the normal high for June 20th is 100 degrees.

About three hours northwest of Las Vegas lies the Fish Lake Valley in Esmeralda county, the least populous county in the state, and second least populous county in the nation. There is no grocery store, no high school, no hospital, but residents don’t want anything different.

1. A California man died at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the first night of EDC. Michael Morse, 34, was pronounced dead just before 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Family members are now questioning the safety of EDC after saying they’ve seen comments online that lines for water were long on the first night of the festival. Insomniac Events did not respond to requests for comment Monday.

2. One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in the west valley. Police responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex near South Cimarron Road and West Charleston Boulevard just after midnight Tuesday. After police got a woman and child out of the apartment, police entered to find a man with a knife. Police attempted to use a stun gun on the man when he lunged at police and he was shot by two officers. The man was pronounced dead at UMC.

3. A Pizza Hut receipt helped police arrest a woman suspected of murder. Kevin Thomas suffered a gunshot wound to the head in November and detectives found the receipt under his body. The receipt had store and order information and the name “Betty” written at the top. Betty Ann Pires had been dating Thomas for three months prior to his death. Pires said she left Thomas at a Pizza Hut the night he was killed but two people came forward, saying Pires admitted to killing Thomas.

• A small neighborhood hospital is opening soon in North Las Vegas. Dignity Health- St. Rose Dominican will be at 1550 West Craig Road. The complex cost about $25 million dollars and will employ about 90 people.
• Prepare for a traffic nightmare on Interstate 15 this weekend. About 140,000 people are heading to the Electric Daisy Carnival at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The worst traffic is expected Monday morning.

2. Three men are in custody after federal authorities seized thousands of MDMA pills. Jordan Cambridge was arrested after selling over 5,000 ecstasy pills to an undercover agent, leading to the search of his “stash house” in North Las Vegas. That’s where police say they found another 5,000 pills. Cambridge and the two other men were arrested just two days before EDC.

3. The man accused of killing the hitman he hired to kill his sixth wife is asking a Las Vegas judge for permission to wear a Tony Romo Dallas Cowboys jersey to his trial. Thomas Randolph’s lawyer says he wants to wear the jersey because he’s a fan. The request will have to go through the jail since the jersey would be part of his trial wardrobe. Opening statements are set to begin today.

Two adults are also charged in the case: Jose Mejia-Henriquez, 18, and Leby Alas-Gomez, 39.

3. A corrections employee committed suicide inside the Nevada Southern Detention Center in Pahrump Tuesday. Detention center staff found the man after responding to a fire alarm in the facility, though no fire was found. The employee’s name and position have not been released.
