Las Vegas schools face $80 million in cuts

The Clark County School District has frozen hiring for nonessential employees, including teachers.

CCSD grapples with a budget deficit that may require up to $80 million in cuts.

Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky warns that widespread layoffs are expected.

He said it is likely that almost every school will be affected.

Skorkowsky said costs in the rapidly growing district have outpaced increases in state funding for education.

Principal Darren Sweikert says to expect class sizes to go up as a result.

The School Board could discuss whether to end the freeze at its Sept. 14 meeting.
