Las Vegas escapes Silverado with 6-4 win

Las Vegas beat Silverado 6-4 on Wednesday, but it was far from easy. The Wildcats took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but Silverado fought back. The Skyhawks scored four in the frame, and loaded the bases before Las Vegas escaped. Las Vegas induced a double play in the seventh to take home the win in the regular season finale. Kevin Verduzco led the way by scoring three of the Wildcats’ runs. Las Vegas improved to 16-3 (9-11 Sunrise League). Silverado dropped to 11-17-1, 8-12.

Basic outlasts Rancho, wins 2-1 in extra innings

Garrett Giles’ bases-loaded walk powered Basic to a 2-1 home win over Rancho in nine innings. Basic scored in the second, Rancho scored in the fourth, and it remained tied until the ninth. Nick Thompson started for the Wolves and pitched 6 1/3 strong innings. Rancho starter Layton Walls went 6 2/3, and neither factored into the decision. Basic improved to 25-5 (15-4 Sunrise League), one game behind first-place Rancho (24-5, 16-3).

Coronado rolls past Foothill, 12-2

Coronado’s baseball team rolled to a 12-2 home win over Foothill on Tuesday. The Cougars pounded out 16 hits, including seven doubles, in the six-inning win. Cristian Herrera doubled twice and drove in three runs. His two-run double in the first inning got Coronado on the board. Coronado has four regular-season games remaining
including games against Basic, Green Valley and Liberty. Coronado is 17-8 overall, 12-4 in the Sunrise League.
Foothill fell to 14-10, 9-7.

Layton Walls twirls complete game as Rancho downs Coronado

Layton Walls went the distance to lead Rancho to a 5-1 home win over Coronado. The Rams righty struck out six, and started two double plays to escape jams. His lone blemish was a solo homer by Cristian Herrera in the fourth. Rancho’s bats chipped away at Coronado, scoring in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Edarian Williams scored twice for the Rams, and scored the first run after leading off the third with a double. The win moved Rancho to 22-4, and 14-2 in the Sunrise League. Coronado fell to 16-8, 11-4.

Green Valley scored five runs in the fifth inning Thursday
to come from behind and beat Foothill, 5-3. The Gators scored five unearned runs in the inning with the help of four Foothill errors. Green Valley bunted three times in the inning, with two runners
coming home on a throwing error after Gavin Amelburu’s bunt. Joe DiGiacomo went the distance to get the win.
He allowed two earned runs on eight hits. The Gators improved to 10-10, 7-4 in the Sunrise League. Foothill fell to 11-7, 6-4.

Rancho smacked four home runs on Saturday
to beat two-time defending state champion Basic, 16-4. The Rams took advantage of five errors to score seven unearned runs. Layton Walls hit a solo homer to kick off Rancho’s eight-run second inning. Jimmy Gamboa went the distance, allowing 3 ER to pick up the victory.
He threw first-pitch strikes to 21 of 22 batters. Rancho now is 8-1 in the Sunrise League, a game ahead of second-place Basic.

Basic softball beat Coronado on Thursday, 4-3 for the first time since 2012. Shelby Basso pitched a complete game, allowing three runs, five hits and striking out eight. Mikayla Berg was 2-for-2 with a two RBIs, two runs and a walk. Basic went ahead 3-2 in the third, then after Coronado tied it in the fifth, regained the lead in the bottom half. Basic defeated Coronado ace Tatum Spangler, who threw a complete game, did not allow and earned run, and struck out 11. The win moved Basic to 8-0 in Sunrise League play with a 2.5-game cushion in first place.

Rancho baseball picked up a 9-1, extra-inning win at Coronado on Thursday. Down a run in the seventh, Rancho did just enough to send it to extras. Rancho exploded for eight runs in the ninth inning, started by Chayse Baker’s two-RBI double. Jimmy Gamboa threw the first six innings, striking out six and allowing one run on six hits. Tanner Ray finished the job with three shutout innings with one hit and three strikeouts. Rancho improved to 11-2, 6-1 in Sunrise League play.
