UNLV might have to send out invitations to its former football players for another Sam Boyd Stadium send-off again next season. The Rebels were expected to move into Allegiant Stadium full time next season, but a dispute with the Raiders might force UNLV’s games against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 5 and Arizona State on Sept. 12 to be played at Sam Boyd.
UNLV football head coach Tony Sanchez says like any good story, the closing of Sam Boyd Stadium is just another chapter in the Rebels’ book. Sanchez and his team were able to close out Sam Boyd in style, with a 38-35 win over San Jose State.

The Mountain West, which released the 2018 football schedule Thursday, gave UNLV a challenging final month of the season. The Rebels play Western Division champion Fresno State at Sam Boyd Stadium on Nov. 3, travel to San Diego State and Hawaii the following two weeks, and close the season at home against rival UNR on Nov. 24. UNLV, which opens Sept. 1 at Southern California, was 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference last season. Sanchez enters his fourth season, having increased the victory total by one each of the previous three seasons. “It’s an interesting schedule when you look at the way it’s broken up,” Sanchez said. “It’s really orderly.”
A plume of thick, black smoke visible across the Las Vegas Valley rose into the sky late Tuesday afternoon . A brush fire at the Wetlands Park, north of Sam Boyd Stadium, burned between six and 10 acres. The fire was reported around 5:30 p.m. No one was injured and no buildings were destroyed. A crew remained on the scene and as of 3 a.m. Wednesday about 50 percent of the fire had been contained. Firefighters will remain at the park until the fire is fully contained. The cause of the fire was unknown.
