James Neal’s new deal with the Calgary Flames, Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas investigation, and Richard Harrison honored.
To afford renting a typical one-bedroom apartment in Las Vegas, a minimum-wage worker without health benefits would need to clock 73 hours a week. Nevada’s minimum wage is $8.25 per hour for employees who are not offered health benefits, and $7.25 an hour for those who do receive benefits. “It’s clear that the minimum wage is not a livable wage,” said Andrew Aurand, vice president for research at NLIHC. In Las Vegas, a resident working 40 hours a week would need to make an hourly wage of $18.71 to afford a two-bedroom apartment.
A day after the long-running show “Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas” closed on the Las Vegas Strip, an investigation into the show’s charitable activity was reported. Marino for years has said that proceeds from merchandise such as T-shirts and DVDs of the show would be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The first public report of an investigation into “Divas” over possible fraud was posted by the blog Vital Vegas. In a voicemail message Sunday, Marino said, “I don’t know what anybody’s talking about, at all,” and reiterated his plans to eventually bring “Divas” back to the stage. “Divas” closed abruptly Saturday after a 33-year run on the Strip that started with 25 years at the Riviera.

“Pawn Stars” debuted in July 2009. The reality show gives viewers an insider’s view of running Gold & Silver Pawn, but mostly it’s about the people: Rick Harrison, who runs the store in Downtown Las Vegas, Corey Harrison, Rick’s son, Chumlee — that’s Austin Russell’s nickname, and The Old Man — Rick’s father, Richard Harrison, who died Monday morning after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. The show featured a parade of local experts on collectors items that show up on pawn shops’ countertops. And the junk that everyone wants to believe is worth hundreds — maybe thousands. The merchandise, and the experts who knew so much about it, captured more attention and prompted several spinoffs. From Counting Cars to American Restoration and Cajun Pawn Stars. Pawn Stars created a national following and a foundation for Reality TV programs in Las Vegas.
