From their backyard in Las Vegas, Don and Noriko Carroll used high-speed, close-up cameras to capture in photos and slow-motion video what had never been seen before in the wild. Hummingbirds drink nectar not by sipping it like through a straw. Rather they trap it with fringe on their narrow, split tongues and draw the fluid inside their bills by moving their tongues in out at up to 30 times a second.
