The same day Gov. Steve Sisolak announced a stay-at-home order, one prominent Nevadan chose this time to emerge into the great outdoors.
Each spring, cottony blobs appear in the branches of desert almond bushes across the Mojave. The silken colonies are spun by Western tent caterpillars. The caterpillars eat newly sprouted leaves and grow to about two inches in length. After a month or two, they will leave their tents to spin cocoons. A few weeks later, they will emerge as nondescript brown moths.
John Harper already has the best high jump in Nevada this year, but that’s not good enough for him. The Mojave senior cleared 6-10 on March 20, and the next-best jump in the state is 6-7. Only nine athletes in the country have done better than 6-10 this year, and he has his eyes on the national best of 7-3. He’s boosted Mojave’s athletic prestige, helping the football and basketball teams to the postseason. But track is where he makes a name for himself on a national level. And it’s hard not to consider him a favorite for the Class 3A state title.
Desert Pines won their second consecutive Class 3A championship on Saturday, taking down Mojave, 54-24.
