Las Vegas morning update for Friday, May 26th

1. A 17-year-old Laughlin High School student walked out of an exam Tuesday morning, and was later found dead near Harrah’s Laughlin hotel-casino that night. Senior Anthony Stearns arrived at school early Tuesday, before walking out on an exam and leaving school grounds. A missing persons report was filed at 4 p.m. when Stearns failed to return home. He was found by a hotel guest who alerted security around 7:30 p.m.

2. A man wearing body armor and a mask backed a tractor-trailer through the gate of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch, and crashed into the front door. Brian Brandt was arrested and faces charges multiple charges including assualt with a deadly weapon. No one inside was hurt and the damage is estimated at $400,000.

3. The Nevada Assembly voted 26-14 on a resolution that asks Congress to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to rein in independent political campaign spending. The vote makes Nevada the 19th state to ask Congress to overturn the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United case.

1. A propaganda video posted on social media by an Islamic State group features brief footage of the Las Vegas Strip. Las Vegas police are treating it as a credible threat, even though the short clip was determined to be from 2015. In wake of the Manchester bombings, and the upcoming holiday weekend, police are stepping up patrols and surveillance on the Strip, downtown and at local community events.

2. A notorious pimp who kidnapped and forced a teenager into prostitution died this weekend in prison. Robert Sharpe III was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday evening and was later pronounced dead Saturday night. Sharpe, was sentenced a year ago to life without parole, and the cause of death has yet to be determined.
3. The SLS Las Vegas has sold to Alex Meruelo and Meruelo Group for an undisclosed amount from Stockbridge Capital Partners. The companies said Tuesday, the transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2017. The SLS Las Vegas was formerly known as the Sahara before reopening in 2014 after a $415 million upgrade.

1. A Las Vegas police officer used a Taser on a man 7 times before using a chokehold for more than a minute Sunday before his death. According to police, officer Kenneth Lopera believed Tashi Brown was attempting to carjack someone outside of The Venetian when Lopera used a Taser on Brown 7 times, struck him and administered a chokehold before Brown became unresponsive. The driver of the truck says he didn’t feel he was being carjacked and Brown would not have faced any charges had he survived. Officer Lopera is currently on paid leave while Brown’s death is investigated.
2. Henderson police chief Patrick Moers faces an internal investigation after he sent out mailers to local businesses promoting Friends of Henderson Police Department Foundation, which Moers said was the department’s only authorized fundraising group. Henderson Mayor Debra March said she was concerned by the mailer and a spokesman with the police department says the city is reviewing its policies in regards to charitable activities.
3. UFC president Dana White and Conor McGregor have agreed on a deal to fight boxer Floyd Mayweather. White said late Wednesday that UFC and McGregor came to terms on a deal and now they must work on a deal with Mayweather’s team. Terms have yet to be released.

1. A man shot and killed himself in public Monday. Police responded at about 1 p.m. to a call on the 500 block on South 11th Street downtown near East Clark, where callers said they were trying to protect children from seeing the crime scene. No additional details were immediately available.
2. A fired CCSD police lieutenant who was fired after he revealed himself as an FBI informant will be reinstated with more than two years backpay. A ruling found that the district wrongfully fired Dan Burgess, who was among several officers who cooperated with the FBI to uncover corruption within the police department. Burgess said in a statement that he looks forward to getting back to work.
3. Police are investigating a possible kidnapping in northwest Las Vegas. Just before 3 p.m., police received a call that a man was seen putting a hand over a woman’s mouth and pushing her into a black sedan near North Hualapai Way and West Centennial Parkway. The caller said another man was in the vehicle. No other details were immediately available.

1. A judge set bail at $350,000 Friday for the man charged with murder after a single punch killed a father of five outside Fremont Street Club. The Las Vegas Justice of the Peace weighted James Beach’s criminal past, which includes an attempted murder conviction.
2. The mas accused of fatally shooting a bus passenger on the Strip in March was found incompetent to stand trial Friday. The judge ordered him sent to a state mental health facility in Las Vegas for treatment that could lead to a competency finding, and prosecution later. Roland Bueno Cardenas faces multiple charges including open murder and attempted murder with a deadly weapon.
3. One person is dead after a shooting in the west valley Saturday afternoon. Police responded to Stober Court near South Rainbow Boulevard and West Flamingo Roads for reports of a person shot in the middle of the road. That person was taken to UMC for surgery, where they later died.

1. A former Las Vegas nightclub promoter was acquitted Thursday of kidnapping and sexual assault charges. A 25-year-old woman testified that Frederick Richards took her to his home in Rhodes Ranch after meeting at Hyde nightclub, and that she awoke the next morning with her underwear across the room. Jurors said they felt the state couldn’t prove the woman’s testimony and that it wasn’t an easy decision to acquit Richards.
2. A man was shot and killed at a northwest Las Vegas apartment complex. Police were dispatched to Bloom Apartment Homes on Gowan Road near Tenaya Way at about 6 p.m. Thursday, where they found a man dead inside a car. Police are still investigating.
3. The Raiders are set to name a general contractor for a new Las Vegas stadium. Raiders president Marc Badain said Thursday that a contract has yet to be finalized, but that they’re working with a Minneapolis-based firm Mortensen Construction that is partners with McCarthy Building Companies in Henderson. A timeline released by the Stadium Authority estimates stadium groundbreaking by late December or early January.

1. James Beach, the suspect in a tourist’s one-punch death, made his first court appearance Wednesday. Beach’s attorney said that there was never an intention to hurt anybody and that the incident was a terrible accident. Beach is being held without bail at Clark County Detention Center.
2. A police report shows a March shooting death in the east Las Vegas Valley was fueled by drugs, sex and jealousy. According to the report, Derrian Stephens was high on meth and with his girlfriend when Eric Flores came to talk with her. Stephens was upset and hit the woman with a fire extinguisher and left. Later, when the woman went with Flores to Stephen’s house to claim her things, an argument ensued and Flores shot Stephens in the neck. Flores was arrested Monday on one count of murder with a deadly weapon.
3. UNLV forward Dwayne Morgan has been suspended after an arrest over the weekend. Morgan was arrested early Saturday on a disorderly conduct charge after a dispute with a cabdriver. UNLV athletics issued a statement saying they are aware of the situation and have suspended Morgan indefinitely.

1. Another White Castle is sliding into Las Vegas. White Castle first debuted in Las Vegas in January 2015, becoming the first location west of the Rocky Mountains. Rob Richardson, whose group owns that location, confirmed he’s opening another White Castle at the northwest corner of Fourth and Fremont streets. It is unknown when the new location is expected to open.
2. Clark County School officials discussed the safety of school buses after a fatal accident that sent more than a dozen student to the hospital on Thursday. Officials said drivers have to make it through 35 hours of driving in the field and 40 hours of classroom instruction training. Students are prepped for emergency scenarios the first week of school, and each route is required to run two evacuation drills. The 10-year-old girl in the sedan that hit the school bus Thursday remains in critical condition.
3. One person was taken to the hospital Friday after a car jacking near the Stratosphere. A man punched the driver of the vehicle, took him out of the car and fled. The man later crashed near Sahara and Las Vegas Boulevard South, before fleeing on foot. He has not been taken into custody.
