Tips to stay safe while celebrating New Year’s Eve

The Rape Crisis Center is reminding holiday revelers to stay safe and aware as they head to New Year’s Eve celebrations across the valley. As part of its “Party Smart” campaign, the center is reminding people planning to go out to arrive together, stay together and leave together. When the party ends, make sure you leave with everyone who came with you, the center said. Don’t let intoxicated friends leave with strangers and use licensed and labeled transportation services to get home.

A horse skull found in Gypsum Cave in mountains east of Las Vegas in 1930, was so well preserved, it was thought to be a modern horse or burro. It sat tucked away on a museum shelf overlooked until recently. It turned out to be 13,000 years old and scientifically significant: the most complete skull ever found of a “New World stilt-legged horse.” Eric Scott, an ice age horse expert at California State University, San Bernardino.

Las Vegas’ recurring New Year’s Eve bash is back and better than ever, officials say. Specifics for the event, which occurs on the Strip and in Downtown Las Vegas, were unveiled Thursday at Fashion Show mall. For the 11th year in a row Fireworks By Grucci is orchestrating the launching of fireworks across seven hotel-casino rooftops stretching from the Stratosphere to the MGM Grand. Beginning at midnight, pyrotechnics will light up the Las Vegas skyline for eight minutes. The explosions will be choreographed to songs by artists including Eric Clapton, Judas Priest and Bruce Springsteen.

The star of stage and screen welcomed Real Estate Millions into her 7,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home to talk about her Las Vegas history. Pia Zadora works in her music studio at her Summerlin home. She performs at the iconic Piero’s Italian Cuisine in downtown Las Vegas. A portrait of Pia Zadora by Andy Warhol is displayed over the living room bar. Memorabilia includes a framed photo of one of Pia Zadora’s first modeling jobs, an ad for Dubonnet wine, her 1985 Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Performance and the 1982 Golden Globe Award for Best Female New Star of the Year.

A Las Vegas firehouse sex investigation is now complete. The Review-Journal in September obtained a document alleging that a firefighter had sex at a fire station. The accuser claimed supervisors tried to cover it up and intimidate the whistleblower. Now more than one city employee has been disciplined. But city officials won’t say who was disciplined or what punishment they received. None of the employees named in the document have apparently been fired or demoted.

Britney Spears will end her residency on the Las Vegas Strip with a performance on “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018.” Her appearance will be broadcast during the nationwide, all-star show. Spears started her Vegas residency over New Year’s weekend 2013. She has no performance dates scheduled for 2018. The 5 1/2-hour “Rockin’ Eve” show will start at 5 p.m. from Times Square in New York. Las Vegas rockers Imagine Dragons are set to perform from the 2nd annual Central Time Zone countdown from New Orleans.
