The Lights FC successful preseason opener had one major issue. Certain fans used a chant that has anti-homosexual connotations. The club is hoping to end its use immediately. The chant has a history of use in Mexican soccer but has been condemned by FIFA. Lights owner Brett Lashbrook: “Of course it’s not permitted. Of course it’s not tolerated.”

The Las Vegas Lights FC are building their team differently than other USL clubs. Coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola is the only Mexican coach in the USL. Sola is using his reputation and connections to sign Mexican players the Lights feel other clubs are overlooking. Lights signees Joel Huiqui and Gerardo Lugo both said Sola was the main reason they came to the team. Both have experience with the Mexican national team. The Lights are hoping to add more players like them for their inaugural season.

The Las Vegas Lights FC signed seven new players Tuesday to preseason contracts. Here’s a look at each, in alphabetical order: Zak Drake, 26, Defender Cristian Gonzalez, 20, Midfielder Jorge Guillen-Torres, 23, Defender Oscar Hernandez, 21, Midfielder Juan Herrera-Perla, 23, Defender Alex Mendoza, 27, Midfielder Andres Muñiz, 22, Forward The Lights’ preseason begins Feb. 10 as the club hosts Major League Soccer’s Montreal Impact.
