Yesterday, the Nevada’s Public Employees’ Retirement System increased next year’s
contribution rates for regular employees from 28 percent to 29.25 percent. The contribution rate
for police and fire employees is going from 40.5 percent to 42.5 percent. Employers and
employees split the contribution increases. This means government employees will see a drop in
take home pay while government agencies simultaneously experience cost increases.

North Las Vegas firefighters are battling a Monday morning blaze at the vacant Barker Motel at 2600 Las Vegas Boulevard North, near Carey Avenue. Firefighters fought strong winds at 3:30 a.m. as well as flames that flared from the roof of the building. Las Vegas Fire Department crews also arrived on scene just before 4 a.m. Winds were gusting between 31 and 37 mph, according to the National Weather Service. This is a developing story. Clark County firefighters responded Monday night to a vacant house fire at 3687 Lanai Ave. Neighbors said the people living there had moved out recently, but had been cleaning the house over the weekend. Neighbors watched as firefighters quickly doused flames coming from inside a car port. One grateful neighbor thanked firefighters with cookies. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
